Description
Artesunate is a potent semisynthetic artemisinin derivative that rapidly kills asexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum. It acts quickly, penetrates the blood–brain barrier, and is the first‑line treatment for severe malaria.
Indications
Severe falciparum malaria
Cerebral malaria
Multidrug‑resistant malaria
Malaria in pregnant women and children when clinically indicated
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, protected from light.
Do not freeze.
Keep out of reach of children.
Warning
Prescription drug for intravenous / intramuscular use only.
Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to artesunate or any artemisinin derivative.
Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment.
Monitor blood count, liver function and parasitemia during treatment.
May cause mild gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness, or neutropenia.
Must be administered under medical supervision.
